Every PrivacyGraph Pixel is supplied eSIM ready, and it is one of the questions we get asked most: is an eSIM better or worse for privacy than a normal SIM card? The honest answer is that the difference is smaller than people expect, and it sits in a different place than they expect.
What an eSIM is
An eSIM is not a card. It is a profile written into a secure chip already inside the phone. Instead of posting you plastic, your network sends you a profile you install. Technically your phone still identifies itself to the mobile network in the same way a plastic SIM does.
What does not change
- Your network still knows which masts your phone connects to, so it still knows roughly where you are.
- Your network still holds records of calls and texts.
- Your account is still tied to whatever identity details you gave when you signed up.
- Neither type of SIM affects what apps on your phone collect about you.
What does change
- Swapping profiles is faster. Changing network, or using a separate profile while travelling, takes minutes rather than a delivery.
- There is no card to be physically removed or cloned from a lost handset.
- Signing up is usually done online, which means less paperwork but also a digital account trail with the provider.
The part that matters more
If your goal is to reduce how much of your life is collected, the SIM format is a footnote. What matters far more is which apps you install, what permissions they hold, and whether your operating system lets you control that. No phone, SIM or VPN makes anyone anonymous. What you can do is stop leaking information you never intended to share, and that is a settings and habits problem more than a hardware one.
